What is a VPN? And why do I would like one for China?

In case you have never visited mainland China in the past (i.e not Hong Kong or Macau) you may well be surprised when you get there and be aware of that you can not access most of the sites that you love and use every day. This is due to the so-called “Great Firewall” of China – a nationwide imposed internet filter that restricts the access of some websites while you are in China. In excess of 2600 key sites are impeded in China. A few of these obstructed sites involve:

  • Google.com
    Gmail.com
    Facebook.com
    Youtube.com
    Yahoo.com
    Twitter.com
    Vimeo.com
    Soundcloud.com
    WordPress.com
    Blogspot.com
    Wikileaks.com

Only recently the UK’s most read online newspaper, The Guardian, was added to the block list.

As you can imagine, being unable to use the above websites delivers a big obstacle. Most of us depend upon websites like these for our social connection, management of tasks, work, and communication. You probably can survive a few days without using such sites, but for those who intend on remaining in China for an extended period of time, we must have an approach to this problem- our living, relationships, and peace of mind count on it!
